In Kyushu, crop yields and quality have declined due to frequent high temperature damage, lack of sunlight, moisture damage, drought damage and other weather risks. In addition, such weather conditions in Kyushu promote the outbreak of insect damage such as brown planthopper and Fusarium head blight on paddy rice. On the other hand, nationwide production does not always meet the needs of actual consumers in terms of cost and quality, and the use of domestic production has been sluggish. Therefore, it is necessary to breed cultivars that meet actual demand needs while adapting to environmental conditions unique to warm regions. So the Crop Breeding Group is engaged in,
- Cultivation of high-yielding paddy rice cultivars with good taste and processing suitable for warm regions that meets the actual demand needs
- Cultivation of high-quality wheat and barley cultivars with enhanced ear germination resistance and Fusarium head blight resistance
- Cultivation of soybean cultivars that have excellent early sowing suitability, can disperse cropping seasons, and achieve stable and high yields.
- Cultivation and evaluation of stable and high-yielding buckwheat cultivars that respond to meteorological risks such as typhoons and moisture damage
The development of these technologies will contribute to the improvement of productivity in the rotation of paddy fields in warm regions.
